The art of photojournalism was the subject of my most recent Digital Journalism II class project, as I followed Vicki Frami in her daily duties as Barista Supervisor.
Frami spends most of her time in front of a computer, but takes advantage of every chance she gets to spend with customers and students -- her favorite part of the job.
After reading and reviewing The Poynter Institute's NewsU course on Language of the Image, I attempted to utilize the elements of photography in my photo slide show.
The basic use of the rule of thirds allowed for visual interest in my photographs, while directing the viewers eye to a particular subject, Vicki and what she was doing.
The different angles I used in my photos, wide and narrow, gave a sense of place to allow the viewer to know where Frami was in the story, and how the Brew is arranged.
Vicki was smiling and cheerful the entire day, so I attempted to capture her sense of emotion in my photographs. Even though I focused on the task she was performing, by capturing her emotion while she was working provides interest to the viewer and also shows that Frami loves what she does.
Other elements I implemented in my photos included: moment, layering, emotion, personality portrait, perspective, and mood.
The storytelling element of this project was key to taking my photography from landscapes and mundane, to vibrant and detailed. It allowed me to share someone else's story in a visually interesting way, through my perspective.
